Powers that Punish.

Charles

The author, a professor in the University of Michigan's Residential College, began this book project out of an attempt to find a convenient archival resource for his students' research. The archive he found in the State of Michigan documents contained a large amount of material on a prison only thirty miles from the University--and a prison that was the largest walled institution of its type when it was built in 1920. Despite its massive structure, the author found out that the interaction between those in the prison and those from the community who took care of them resulted in an extremely close and intimate, but unanticipated relationship.
