On the Edge of the Cliff and Forms and Meanings.

A French historian who teaches at a university in Paris, Roger Chartier takes the challenges in his chosen era of study--the early modern period--and explores them in ways that make them interesting to scholars and readers in the twentieth century. He is sensitive to the ways that the production of the vehicle for communication, as well as the ways that the recipient of that communication, all influence how meaning is sent, received, and responded to. His book even tackles electronic communication and cyberspace.
