While the original topic for this program is extremely interesting (discussing the emergence of African American literature in the United States as early as 1760), it features a very special moment. The author, an African American professor of English, was doing some research in a collection of papers at the Library of Congress when she ran across a familiar name, which turned out to be her great-grandfather, who had been brought to the United States as a slave. The program ends with her reading her great-grandfather's poem, "God Made Man, Man Made the Slave," which is also the title of his autobiography she helped in getting published. She is now teaching at Washington University in St. Louis.
